Who said governors can’t serve looks? Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu gave fashion lovers a moment to remember after making a surprise appearance on the Lagos Fashion Week runway.
The governor stepped away from his usual political setting and joined professional models on the runway during Nigerian designer Ugo Monye’s presentation on Saturday, October 31, at the Federal Palace Hotel in Lagos.

Dressed in a striking traditional-inspired ensemble blending the flowing silhouette of a caftan with elements of a kimono, Sanwo-Olu confidently made his way down the runway as the audience watched and cheered.
The unexpected appearance quickly became one of the talking points from the event, with the governor appearing comfortable as he interacted with the crowd and embraced the moment.
Sanwo-Olu Explains Why He Hit the Runway
Following his appearance, Sanwo-Olu took to social media to share his experience, explaining that he temporarily stepped away from his government responsibilities to support Ugo Monye and celebrate the designer’s work.
His decision to participate also highlighted the growing intersection between public figures, Nigerian culture and the country’s thriving fashion industry.
This Isn’t Sanwo-Olu’s First Runway Walk
Interestingly, this is not the governor’s first time stepping onto the Lagos Fashion Week runway.
Sanwo-Olu previously made his runway debut in October 2023, when he walked during a presentation by Nigerian designer Emmy Kasbit.
His latest appearance therefore marks his second known runway walk at the prestigious fashion event.
Lagos Fashion Week 2026: Bigger Than Fashion
The 2026 Lagos Fashion Week, running from October 28 to November 1, is themed “CRAFTED: Heritage, Innovation, Circular Futures.”
The event brings together some of Africa’s leading designers, models, creatives and fashion professionals to showcase the continent’s evolving fashion identity while celebrating craftsmanship, heritage and innovation.
With Sanwo-Olu’s surprise runway appearance adding an unexpected celebrity-political twist to the event, this year’s Lagos Fashion Week has certainly given audiences another moment to talk about.
And judging by the reaction, the governor may just have reminded everyone that the Lagos runway is not only for professional models.
